Hand forged chisels

These chisels are unlike anything available in the world. They combine my favorite aspects of both Japanese and early oval back American framing chisels into a true East meets West fusion tool. Their sizing places them both longer and beefier than Japanese framing chisels (Tataki Nomi), but smaller than American framing chisels which were designed for much larger and rougher work. They would be perfect suited to bench top duties as well as Japanese sized timber framing. (this is normally smaller and more intricate joinery held to much closer tolerances.)
As for their construction, they are laminated tools, which means unlike modern edge tools made from one single kind of steel, they are made of a combination of low carbon antique wrought iron (for the body of the tool) and very high carbon steel for the cutting edge. (Japanese white paper steel is used here for its purity and extremely high carbon content) This type of construction creates a superior tool, able to have a much harder edge while also being flexible and easy to sharpen. This was the old way edge tools were made globally until skill and actual dedication to craft was replaced by mass production and assembly lines. Only in small family forges is this carried on mostly in Japan.
Wrought iron is an amazing material, not only giving us a superior tool in use, but its inherent makeup of silica fibers can be etched in acid to reveal the most unique wood grain like appearance. Its truly something you must hold in your hands to fully appreciate.
As seen in the photo to the side here, a Japanese large framing chisel is shown middle stage to showcase the sizing of these tools. For now we have the three sizes available below, which are in fact the same three sizes used by out students in Japanese timber framing classes. Each of these chisels is hand forged, one at a time, then meticulously filled, ground, and polished, before being stamped, acid etched and heat treated. A tapered ferrule is forged and fit to each chisel, and a custom handle is made from trees from out land.
